She’s your lobster — and now she’s your iPad’s too.
This repeating lobster motif case is equal parts playful and practical, keeping your tech safe while serving up major seaside charm (and a wink to your favorite ’90s sitcom).
In this pattern, we’re using the waistcoat stitch: a crochet stitch that looks like knitting, which makes designed colorwork a fun addition to your work.

pattern notes
Gauge:
18 WS stitches = 4” wide
19 WS rows = 4” tall
Finish size when laying flat: 7.75”w x 10”t x 0.25”d
- This pattern uses the waistcoat stitch, or knit crochet stitch.
- Insert the hook into the center post of the stitch below, instead of inserting through the V on the top of the stitch as you would for a SC.
- Yarn over, pull a loop through that post
- Yarn over, pull through both loops.
- This pattern is crocheted in the round.
- Do not begin each row with a chain stitch. The SL st to join is followed by the first waistcoat stitch. Place a marker on the SL st to mark where you will be joining.
- I find it easier to place the marker in the joining SL st AFTER you have completed the next round’s first waistcoat stitch.
- You will carry your alternate color along in the pattern, as in tapestry crochet style.
- When changing colors in the middle of a row, pick up your new color for the final yarn- over/pull-through two loops of your waistcoat stitch. This will be the top of the next stitch.
- When joining rows during color changes, the pattern looks best and does not jog as much if you finish the last WS with the same color, and change colors during the SL st to join.
- The graph pattern is half of the repeating lobster pattern. You will work it twice, stitches 1-36 are the front of the case, and repeat for 37-72 to form the back of the case.
the pattern
To begin: With Color A (Blue), create a slip knot and chain 37 stitches. Turn.
Row 1: In the first stitch from the hook, insert your hook into the front loop only and
create a single crochet.
Continue to SC in the front loop only until the end of the row. (36 SC)
Rotate your work!
Continue to SC around in what is now the front loop – this was previously the
back loop. (72 SC)
Join with a SL st.
You have effectively made a “pita pocket” sleeve!
Row 2: Do NOT chain 1. WS into first SC.
Place marker before the WS you just made, into where the joining-SL st is, to mark the start of the row.
WS in each stitch around (72 WS)
SL st to join
Row 3: Continue to follow the chart below.
Remember to follow the pattern for 1-36 from right to left, and repeat for stitches 37-72 on the back of the case.
Do not CH 1 to begin any row.
Always place a stitch marker. (This just makes your life easier!)
To Finish: Cut yarn and pull through. Turn inside out and weave in ends.
Use Hairdryer technique to block if using acrylic yarn. This will remove the lean from the pattern to create a rectangle.
